Drawing Lines in Space Activity: Art History and Studio Art (Early Childhood)

$4.00

Use this full Lesson Plan and Google Slideshow to guide your children through a hands-on Studio Art activity embedded within a study of a work from Art History! Increase your students' cultural awareness by discussing this work from 2nd Century BC China (you will find information about the artwork, as well as a link for further reading, within the slideshow, under Speaker Notes).

Your children will enjoy creating their own 'dancer' like the one from 2nd Century BC China, using kid-friendly pipe cleaners to form three-dimensional shapes. Let their imaginations and curiosity take their artworks to new places, beyond what they see in my example videos and photos (which are embedded throughout the slideshow for your convenience)!

The slideshow also includes suggestions for warm up-activities like drawing, movement, and brief partner work; a mini lecture and group discussion; and a group reflection. Use this with your in-person classes or online.

Minimal Prep work

A grown-up just needs to cut holes in a small piece of cardboard for each child. Your little ones can handle the rest! Alternatively, you could have children build their sculptures directly onto a large popsicle stick by wrapping the pipe cleaner around its base before creating the standing sculpture, in case if you have large classes and would like to avoid the extra prep work.

Art Tips and Resources for Teachers

At the end of the slideshow, you will find tips and resources for how to engage more deeply with art as a teacher. I wrote these tips with non-art teachers in mind, because sometimes we don't know where to begin with a subject that is outside of our expertise. The Artful and Educational philosophy is that a well-informed and curious teacher will benefit her students and shape the way they think for a lifetime. It is so important for you, as the teacher, to learn as much as you possibly can and remain curious. This is why I included some information to get you to think more critically about art, and its role in your classroom (or life outside of school)! My hope is that you will continue to deepen your appreciation for art over time, so that you can share in your students' enthusiasm about the subject and create enriching shared experiences together in your classroom.

Enjoy this project, and please feel free to leave a review once you have tried it out in your classroom!
