What to Expect from Private Art Lessons

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hire an artist to be your private learning coach? Many of our art learning experiences have been highly structured in school environments with anywhere from 12-35 other students for every teacher. Private lessons can be a way to treat yourself to individualized instruction on your own terms. This list will help you know what to expect!

◦The sessions will typically move at your own pace and the teacher will meet you at your current skill level

◦You can set your own goals. Be prepared to discuss your reasons for taking private lessons. If your goal is to become a stronger artist and apply for academic art programs or exhibitions, your teacher can tailor your activities to prepare you for those goals. If your goal is to relax and enjoy making art or simply to learn something new, your teacher should give you the opportunity to articulate that and should respect that as well.

◦You can ask for more or less of something. The teacher should tailor the lessons to your needs and interests, and the class is only for you, so you should feel empowered to speak up for what you want.

◦Learn more quickly. Your teacher can correct mistakes much more quickly when there is only one student or a small group of students. This makes for a more efficient use of your time and helps you progress more quickly.

◦You and your teacher can adjust the lessons as your needs and interests change. In a class you can’t do this because you are following a set plan with the benefit of the entire class at the core of all activities.
