A Tour of My Online Course, 2D Design and Abstraction

This blog post is to showcase my new online course, 2D Design and Abstraction. This Studio Art course guides students through a series of lectures, demonstrations and prompts for creating original, dynamic designs on paper.

My asynchronous online art course covers the fundamentals of 2D Design and is great for teens applying to art schools, and adults interested in improving their portfolios. Learn at your own pace, on your own schedule.

There are nine chapters:

  • Chapter 1: Welcome!

  • Chapter 2: Form and Space

  • Chapter 3: Composition

  • Chapter 4: Relationships Within Your Composition

  • Chapter 5: Balance

  • Chapter 6: Positive and Negative Space

  • Chapter 7: Value

  • Chapter 8: Pattern, Grids and Rhythm

  • Chapter 9: Conclusion

Each Chapter contains Art History Connections. Here is a gallery of sample artworks studied in the course, all courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Open Access database.

Here is a sample prompt for one of the course’s first independent studio topics:

Create a small box, and draw two circles inside of it. Make it look like one is much farther away from the other. Experiment. Allow yourself multiple attempts to achieve the desired result. Pause the video and resume when you are satisfied with your result.

All studio prompts also contain a Self-Assessment Checklist so students may monitor their own progress.

I hope you enjoy taking 2D Design and Abstraction as much as I enjoyed creating it. Feel free to email me at artfuleducational@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback!
