Supplies for Beginner Painting Students

Here are some supplies you will need to get started with painting.

Acrylic Painting

1. Palette paper or a plastic palette (another option)

2. Palette knife set

3. Starter brushes (upgrade down the line or email me for recommendations)

4. Posca markers

5. Starter paint set

6. Drawing Pencils, Eraser, and Sharpener

7. Mixed media drawing pad

8. Artist tape for clean, crisp borders

Oil Painting

*Note: students must work with oil paints outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, as the solvents are toxic. Avoid getting oil paint on your skin, and do not expose yourself or others in your home to solvent fumes if you don’t have proper ventilation!

1. Starter paint set (the cost is a bit high but Williamsburg oils are among the highest quality you can find)

2. Hog bristle brushes

3. Nitrile gloves or latex gloves to protect your skin while working with oil paints and toxic solvents

4. Turpentine for thinning your paint, speeding drying time and cleaning brushes

5. Liquin for a quicker drying time and a glossy finish

6. Linseed oil for slower drying time (cold pressed is slower and has a shine)

7. Rags

8. Glass jars with covers, from your recycling bin

9. A small piece of mesh chicken wire to stuff in your glass jar, so that you can clean your brushes against it.

10. Canvas

11. Oil painting paper

12. Canvas paper
